  • 2 Tablespoons of honey (best to use raw organic honey)
  • 2 Cups of warm water


Combine honey (tablespoon by tablespoon) with water until the mixture is thinned out enough to apply to the hair. Increase the measurement of honey if you have a lot of hair.

Spray the solution onto your hair and let it sit for thirty minutes.

5 Insanely Simple Homemade Masks You Can Make in Your Kitchen

Sometimes the best strengthening and conditioning masks for your hair aren't found in the sprawling hair aisles of Target or your local beauty supply store&mdashthey can be created right in your kitchen. Now, I'm no licensed trichologist, but with all the concoctions I've whipped up in my kitchen to treat all my hair woes (from dehydration to breakage and reversing damage), I do consider myself a kitchen beautician.

These five hair masks are packed with essential oils, fruits, vegetables, and other protein-rich ingredients packed with vitamins and minerals to nourish your crowning glory, inside and out. The beauty about homemade hair masks is that you're able to tailor your masks to treat specific hair concerns. Suffering from brittle, breakage-prone hair? Olive and coconut oil will be your best friend. Tired of dull, lackluster hair? Have you heard of my dear friend, mayonnaise?

Below, five of the best beginner-friendly hair mask tutorials to treat every hair woe.


What you'll need: bananas, olive oil, and honey

No one loves to eat brown-speckled bananas. But, you spent your hard-earned money on them, so rather than throw them away, crush them (or blend them, as Ashly did in the video above) to make a simple yet super nourishing mask for dry hair. Bananas are rich in potassium and improve manageability by making the hair shaft softer and shinier. Next, add olive oil, which is rich in fatty acids, for a surge of moisture to dehydrated hair. Not only is honey great for reducing breakage and frizz, but it also conditions the hair and adds back shine.


What you'll need: virgin coconut oil, argan oil, and a little hair dye (optional)

Adding a dollop of toning conditioner (like oVertone&rsquos, which come in basically any shade of the rainbow) to these hydrating ingredients will create a hair mask that revives the color of your hair while adding a massive amount of shine. It&rsquos the easiest way to maintain your hair color between appointments.


What you'll need: almond milk, olive oil, and flax seed

Alexandra suffered from major hair loss after the birth of her baby. And this mask&mdashwhich she applies root to end&mdashhelped her grow her long (omg, so long) gorgeous hair back. The first step is to transform the flax seeds into an gooey gel similar to an egg, then mix it with the almond milk and olive oil and smooth it onto the area you&rsquore wanting to focus on (so the scalp if you&rsquore wanting hair growth, the shaft if you're wanting to fortify). Let it sit for an hour then rinse.


What you'll need: bentonite clay and apple cider vinegar

If you're an avid YouTube watcher or spend way too much time scrolling through Instagram, you've likely already seen the hype surrounding the Aztec Indian Clay and apple cider vinegar mask. It's been praised as one of the best masks for skin, but it's also ahhhmazing for reversing hair damage. In this video, Shlinda mixes her Indian clay with apple cider vinegar and generously applies it throughout her hair, making sure the hair shaft is completely coated. The clay is great for detoxifying the hair and cleansing it. Apple cider vinegar is used in hair masks to restore the hair's natural pH balance and breaking down any build-up by cleansing the scalp. ACV is also used as a rinse for severely damaged hair.


What you'll need: avocado, lemon, olive oil, manuka honey, lemon, and essential oils (optional)

Much like a green smoothie, this hair mask is great for overall hair health. Kourtney Kardashian&rsquos long, shiny hair is the perfect testament for this mask, which she created with her hairstylist, Andrew Fitzsimons, for Poosh. Avocado smooths and detangles, lemon is antibacterial and soothes an itchy scalp, olive oil protects hair from heat, honey is soothing, and the optional essential oils are &ldquoso you don&rsquot have to smell like a cobb salad,&rdquo Fitzsimons says. Throw it all in the blender, leave it on for 45 minutes, and you, too, can have hair that shines as bright as Kourt&rsquos does.

Both Colombini and Cable agree that at-home versions don&rsquot typically last as long as salon treatments.

&ldquoWhen a hairstylist mixes a toner for a client, it could require multiple shades to make the perfect tone for them,&rdquo explains Cable. &ldquoEach client&rsquos toner is customized to them specifically, which is why most at-home versions aren&rsquot exactly comparable,&rdquo she adds.

However, &ldquothey are a great substitute for when you can&rsquot get in to see your stylist,&rdquo assures Colombini (which is good news considering we&rsquore a year into the pandemic).

I’m a DIY person. I love home remedies that are both time and cost-effective. Give these hair masks below a try or if you’re super ambitious create your own recipes. Always experiment with the ingredient ratios to determine what works best with your hair.

DIY Hair Mask Recipes

Here’s a quick overview of the benefits of each ingredient below.

Olive oil: Ideally, you’ll want to use extra virgin olive oil for your hair masks. The nutrients in olive oil promote hair growth by nourishing the hair follicles. A natural conditioner, olive oil will make your hair stronger and more pliable, preventing breakage, while locking in moisture and shine. Try warming the olive oil before combining with other ingredients, especially when using honey.

Honey: A natural humectant, emollient and conditioner, honey helps hair retain moisture, while conditioning, softening, and increasing shine. Ideally, use raw honey.

Brown sugar: A great exfoliant for a dry, itchy scalp, brown sugar is also effective as a clarifier, and will strip product-buildup from the scalp and hair.

Eggs: Eggs help prevent hair loss while stimulating hair growth. They’re also helpful for removing unwanted oils, and repairing damaged hair. Use only the egg yolk for dry hair.

Coconut oil: A deep conditioner, coconut oil not only conditions, but penetrates the hair, locking in moisture and shine. It’s also great for treating and preventing split ends.

Apple cider vinegar: Apple cider vinegar is an amazing ingredient that cleanses hair without stripping it of its natural oils, while removing chemical and product-buildup. Its anti-fungal properties soothe dry, flaky scalps.

Yogurt: Treats dull, damaged, and lackluster hair, locking in moisture. I use this starter to make my own yogurt.

Avocado: The healthy fats in avocados both moisturize and condition dry hair, while stimulating hair growth.

1. Homemade Olive Oil Hair Mask

Use these hair masks a couple times a month to moisturize and nourish you hair.


  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil: A natural conditioner, olive oil will make your hair stronger and more pliable, while also preventing breakage. It also locks in moisture to add shine.
  • 2 Tablespoons of brown sugar

Mix olive oil and brown sugar together in a bowl. Massage the mixture into your scalp to remove dead, flaky skin. Apply the remainder to the ends of your hair, leaving on for 20 minutes before rinsing.

2. Egg And Olive Oil Hair Mask

Here’s another easy hair mask you can whip up quickly:


Crack two eggs into a small bowl. Add a couple of tablespoons of olive oil to the egg mixture and combine. Saturate hair, leaving mask on for approximately 20 minutes before shampooing.

3. Yogurt And Honey Hair Mask


Combine all ingredients, applying to hair starting at the scalp and ending at the roots. Completely cover hair with shower cap, waiting 15 minutes before washing.

4. Coconut Oil Hair Mask Recipe


In a bowl, combine coconut oil and apple cider vinegar. Apply to dry or wet hair and leave on 20 minutes before washing.

5. Avocado, Honey, and Olive Oil Hair Mask


  • 1 avocado pitted
  • 2 Tablespoons honey
  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 drops favorite essential oil

Thoroughly mash avocado into a paste. Combine with remaining ingredients. Apply mixture onto damp hair, while gently massaging into scalp. Cover hair with a shower cap, and leave on for 45 minutes. Wash and style as usual.

DIY Mayo & Strawberry Hair Mask for Dry Hair

This is a really great quick recipe that anyone can do on the fly! If your hair is lacking is moisture and luster, this recipe can quickly add a ton of shine and hydration. Please note that depending on the length and thickness of your hair, you may need more mayo or strawberries. Adjust accordingly!

DIY Fermented Rice Water Recipe:

Benefits of Rice Water on Hair:

The benefits of rice water on hair are plentiful! Rice water contains a ton of healthy vitamins and minerals which can aid in hair growth and strength. Selenium, magnesium, vitamins B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, and B6, as well as folic acids, amino acid, vitamin K, and niacins. All of these vitamins and minerals are crucial for healthy hair growth.

  • Helps hair grow faster
  • Strengthens hair follicles
  • Hydrates the hair and scalp
  • Prevents bacteria and other scalp diseases
  • Prevents dandruff
  • Moisturizes dry, itchy scalp
  • Adds shine and vitality to dull hair
  • Heals damaged hair

Because rice water is so rich in vitamins and minerals, this method will work especially well on natural hair, but ALL hair types and styles can benefit from this method. The growth and strength you'll notice will really blow your mind!

You'll Need:

  • 1/2 cup raw, long grain uncooked white rice (brown rice is too rich and contains way too much protein, while white long grain rice is just perfect for this!). There is no need for special rice, this is simply cooking rice!
  • 2 cups water – optional. After being fermented for so long, the rice water will start smelling very bad, so adding some essential oils will help combat the stench!
  • mason jar or any other clean jar with a lid


  1. Add 1/2 cup of rice (uncooked) and 2 cups of water into the mason jar. Shake the jar well and let sit for a couple of hours.
  2. Strain the liquid and pour it back into the jar. You can discard the rice or use it for cooking! Straining the rice will ensure that all the dirt is removed.
  3. Leave the rice water to sit at room temperature for a day or two (at least 24 hours) or until it develops a sour smell (this is the fermentation process!).
  4. Once fermentation occurs, add 2 more cups of water to the jar and store in the refrigerator for another day.
  5. Your rice water will then be ready to use!

How to Use:

There are several ways you can use the rice water to strengthen and encourage growth.

  1. Pour the rice water into a spray bottle and spray directly onto hair. Make sure to saturate entire head. Leave on for as little as 20 minutes to 30 minutes, but we recommend a total of 45 minutes. Wash out and shampoo and condition as usual. Repeat twice a week.
  2. Add the rice water to any hair mask. Simply substitute the liquid in the mask recipe for the rice water. If the recipe doesn't call for any liquid, simply add in about 1 tbsp of the rice water.
  3. Rinse hair with rice water. After shampooing, rinse your hair with the rice water and follow up with a conditioner. Rinsing your hair with rice water will give your strands an added boost of vitamins and minerals they otherwise wouldn't get. It also helps to cleanse and de-gunk hair, leaving hair shiny and soft.

Be sure to use the rice water consistently for best results! I like to use my rice water at least twice a week!

Other Uses for Fermented Rice Water

While rice water can be used to strengthen, grow, and prevent hair fall, it can also be used for other purposes as well. Because rice water helps to restore the hair's natural pH, it can also prevent the production of dandruff. This can improve overall hair health and also add a ton of shine to otherwise dull, lackluster hair.

Another great benefit of rice water is as a skin toner. Rice water is packed full of vitamins and minerals. Therefore, it can balance the skin's pH, making it the perfect toner for all skin types. Simply use a cotton ball to apply the rice water to the skin, just like would you any toner.

You can also use rice water to wash your face with! Instead of using regular water, use rice water and start seeing some amazing benefits! Pro tip: add some organic essential oils to your rice water. Not only will it make it smell nice, but it can also help fight off specific problems.

Which means it's never too early or late to give your hair a reset, like with this coconut restoring mask.

1. Take one tablespoon of coconut oil and another of olive oil and combine them in a bowl.

2. Add three to four drops of vitamins A and E oils into the same bowl and mix.

3. Apply the mask to the length of the hair while avoiding your scalp, and let it sit for 30 minutes before rinsing it out.

Hydrating Avocado and Oatmeal Mask

"Pink clay and avocado are often used on the face but are equally as effective when used on the hair. This DIY mask can be used on both the hair and skin. Pink clay works to purify and strengthen, while avocado nourishes and hydrates, and apple cider controls excess oil production. The result is a purifying and treatment that addresses excess oil while also revitalizing lackluster and dull skin and hair."&mdashAnna Mitsios, founder of Edible Beauty Australia

1. Mix one small ripe avocado, one tablespoon of apple cider, one tablespoon of oatmeal (or pink clay if you have it), and one tablespoon of agave in a bowl, blend well. It's optional to add two to three drops of rosemary essential oil in this mix if you're wanting to boost some circulation to the hair.

2. Add more or less than two tablespoons of coconut yogurt to achieve your desired thickness.

3. Apply on wet hair which has been towel dried. Start at the scalp and work your way to the tips of your hair.

4. Leave on for 20-30 minutes and then rinse hair as normal.

Healthy Honey Yogurt Mask

"This mask is great for all hair types and works especially well for dry damaged hair. The antioxidants found in extra virgin olive oil promote a healthy scalp and new hair growth. Honey is a humectant which helps with moisture absorption while the beneficial proteins and vitamins in greek yogurt help repair and strengthen hair." &mdashJessica Palermo, founder of Palermo Body

1. Place 2 tablespoon of yogurt in small bowl.

2. Gently warm 1 tablespoon of honey and 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a small sauce pan to incorporate (do not overheat). Pour mixture over Greek yogurt and stir until completely mixed.

3. Apply mask to hair working up from your ends and making sure to massage into your scalp to stimulate circulation.

4. Rinse after 30-45 min.

Moringa Magic Mask

"Lightweight and easily absorbed, moringa oil won't weigh your hair down or make your roots oily. Not only does it moisturize and condition, it detangles, promotes healthy hair growth, protects against breakage, and nourishes the scalp. Honey attracts and seals moisture into the hair and protects roots, leaving hair strong and well nourished. 1. Add 1 tablespoon of moringa oil, 1 tablespoon of honey, and 1 ripe avocado together in a blender and whip the whole mixture up until its soft and fluffy.

2. Apply the mixture to damp, clean hair and also massage it onto your scalp.

3. Put a shower cap on your hair and let it sit for 30 minutes before rinsing out.

4 Parsley Rinse

Tired of spending big bucks on those fancy shine sprays, organic hair products and whatnot? Well that can mean only one thing – time for more homemade products for shiny hair! And this rinse right here is something you simply have to try! The preparation is a piece of cake, simply brew a strong parsley tea (yes, the same parsley you’d use in salads and soups) and pour over your hair as a final rinse. No need to rinse out at all – just dry your hair as usual and enjoy its blinding shine!

Best Herbs for Healthy Hair


Packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, dried hibiscus flowers can help improve the overall health of your hair and scalp. I would avoid this if you have blonde or light brown hair because it gives the ACV a red tint, which is great for red or dark hair highlights, but could temporarily stain lighter hair.


Lavender is said to deep condition hair, which in turn helps it stay soft and shiny.


Rosemary is chock full of oils and nutrients that nourish the root, encourage hair growth, and increase circulation in the scalp. If you don’t have fresh or dried herbs, add a couple of drops of rosemary essential oil for the same hair growth benefits.


Thyme delivers powerful nutrients to hair follicles that are necessary for healthy hair growth. Like rosemary, thyme improves blood circulation to the scalp and encourages hair to grow thicker and stronger.


Ginseng is often found in shampoos and conditioners because of its hair stimulating benefits. Not only does it promote hair growth, it also reduces shedding and decreases inflammation in the scalp.


Nettle leaves are rich in silica and sulfur which are great hair boosters. Applying nettle topically not only promotes healthy hair growth, but it can also help scalp conditions like psoriasis and dandruff.

Marshmallow Root

Marshmallow root contains low concentrations of ceramide precursors which bind to hair, making strands look thicker and feel stronger. It’s also somewhat slippery and can therefore be used as an alternative to conditioner.

While I was able to find all of these herbs in the bulk bins at my local health food store, you can also order them online if that’s easier. And it doesn’t matter if you use fresh or dried herbs. I used a combination of both depending on what was readily available at the store. Either way, the ratio stays the same.

Bonus! Cleopatra's Shampoo Recipe for Strong Hair

As a bonus to this post, I decided to share with you the super easy recipe that Cleopatra used to wash her hair with. This shampoo recipe will make your hair strong and prevent breakage overtime.

Cleopatra's Shampoo for Strength

Cleopatra's hair was said to be a gift from the gods. The soft, shiny strands that cascaded passed her shoulders made all women envious. Cleopatra gave credit to her cleansing and moisturizing routine which was actually rather simple.

Take 1-2 cups of purified water (NO TAP WATER!), and crack one egg into the water, proceed by adding 2 tbsp. of lemon juice. Whisk the mixture and apple it to your hair, massage and rinse. For optimum results, use the vinegar rinse after shampooing and then follow up with the yoghurt mask.
